Balance
Life is about having balance. Certainly not an easy task to achieve but definitely a rewarding one once who have figured it out.
I used to consider myself an extremist.I would find something that I enjoyed and exercised the enjoyment out of it until there was none left. For instance, I found a liking to crossfit, a high intensity fitness program that incorporates elements of several sports and exercises, did it six times a week for over a year and injured my back forcing me to stop. Another example,I developed a liking to tuna, had it almost everyday for lunch until I was unable to tolerate the taste. I would also overwork myself in all aspects of my life; in the classroom, outside the classroom, at home, just about everywhere. Clearly these are extremist characteristics. I had no balance and that was something I needed.
My sister, science and math teacher by day and yoga instructor by night, often spoke to me about how essential it is to take a moment to breathe, meditate, and be grounded. Once again, not an easy task but I started and during that difficult and inconsistent process, I realized that I loved and appreciated many things but did not allow these things to enter my life because I built a wall that said, "I don't have time, I am overwhelmed." I needed to evaluate my priorities. We all need to make time to undergo this type of evaluation.
Now I am beginning to become aware of what I should and should not make time for. It's not always easy I know; as a wife, a doggy mom, a teacher, a friend, a daughter, a sister, an athlete, a Christian, a reader, a writer, an artist, a baker...the list goes on. How to incorporate these passions into our everyday life is a lifelong challenge. I think the secret to this is to accept the fact that you cannot make time for all these things in one day. Find a balance, breathe, and connect with the roots of your true being.
